Does the UK have a 21ct / 875 gold hallmark standard?

No. 21ct gold corresponds to approximately 875 parts gold per 1,000, but 875 is not one of the statutory UK gold hallmarking standards.

Is 858 the correct fineness number for 21ct gold?

No. 21ct gold is approximately 87.5% pure, so the usual millesimal fineness figure is 875, not 858.

What are the recognised UK gold fineness standards?

The recognised UK gold hallmarking fineness standards include 375 for 9ct, 585 for 14ct, 750 for 18ct, 916 for 22ct, 990 for high-fineness gold and 999 for fine gold. The UK hallmarking system does not include an 875 / 21ct standard.

What happens if 21ct / 875 gold is submitted for UK hallmarking?

Because there is no UK 875 hallmark standard, an article cannot receive a UK 875 / 21ct hallmark. If the article meets the requirements for a recognised lower UK standard, it can be hallmarked at that applicable standard; for an article around 875 fineness, the next recognised lower UK gold standard is 750 / 18ct.

Can imported jewellery have an 875 manufacturer's stamp?

Yes. Jewellery manufactured for markets where 21ct gold is used can carry an 875 or 21ct manufacturer's or overseas fineness marking. That marking is not, by itself, a full UK statutory hallmark.

Is most 21ct jewellery in the UK imported?

21ct / 875 jewellery encountered in the UK is commonly imported from markets where 21ct jewellery is manufactured and sold, but origin varies and not every 21ct item should automatically be assumed to be imported.

Can Gold Factory buy 21ct / 875 gold?

Yes. Gold Factory can test, assess and buy 21ct / 875 gold even though 875 is not a UK statutory hallmarking standard. The buying valuation is based on the actual item, its assessed purity, weight and the applicable Gold Factory buying rate.

Can a piece marked 875 also carry a UK 750 hallmark?

Yes, an imported piece may already carry a manufacturer's or overseas 875 mark and may later receive a recognised UK 750 hallmark if it is assayed and accepted at that standard. The 875 mark is not the UK hallmark.

Does a UK 750 hallmark mean an item originally made as 21ct contains only 75% gold?

Not necessarily. A 750 hallmark certifies that the article meets the 750 standard. An item may test above that minimum, but its actual fineness should be established by appropriate assessment rather than inferred solely from a manufacturer's mark.

Can Gold Factory sell an item as UK-hallmarked 21ct gold?

No. There is no UK 875 / 21ct hallmarking standard. Imported jewellery may carry an overseas or manufacturer's 875 mark, but that must be distinguished from a recognised UK hallmark.

UK Hallmarks

What is a hallmark?

A hallmark is an independently applied mark confirming that a precious-metal article has been tested and meets the legal standard of fineness for the metal description. It is a long-established form of consumer protection in the UK.

Is all Gold Factory jewellery hallmarked?

All Gold Factory jewellery that is required by UK law to carry a hallmark is hallmarked. Some very small items can fall within legal weight exemptions.

Does a hallmark tell me the carat of gold?

A hallmark includes a fineness mark that identifies the precious-metal standard. Gold Factory can help explain the marks on a particular item.

Does hallmarking guarantee the exact weight?

No. Hallmarking relates to precious-metal fineness and legal marking, not to the exact finished weight of the jewellery.
