Common Silver Fineness Marks
UK hallmarking recognises several silver fineness standards, including 800, 925, 958 and 999. Sterling silver is 925, while Britannia silver is 958 fineness.
Traditional Symbols
Traditional symbols can appear in addition to the compulsory millesimal fineness mark. For example, the lion passant is associated with sterling silver and the Britannia symbol with 958 silver. Traditional symbols are additional marks rather than the whole hallmark by themselves.
The Silver Weight Threshold
Subject to other legal exemptions, an article described as silver generally requires a recognised hallmark when the precious-metal weight is 7.78 grams or more.
Tarnish Is Not a Hallmark Issue
A genuine hallmarked silver item can still tarnish. Hallmarking verifies fineness; it does not mean the surface will remain bright without care.
