Gemstones Are Not All the Same
The word gemstone covers materials with very different hardness, toughness, porosity, chemistry and sensitivity to heat or chemicals. A care method that is safe for one stone can damage another.
Colour and Natural Variation
Many gemstones are valued primarily for colour, but hue, tone and saturation interact with transparency, cut and inclusions. Natural stones can show variations that are part of their identity rather than defects.
Treatments
Gemstones can be heated, filled, dyed, irradiated, coated or otherwise treated to improve appearance or stability. Treatments are common in parts of the gemstone market and can affect care, value and disclosure. Ask about the specific stone rather than assuming every gem is untreated.
Durability
Hardness is resistance to scratching, but toughness describes resistance to breaking or chipping. A hard stone can still be vulnerable to impact along cleavage directions. Settings should protect the stone according to how the jewellery will be worn.
Care
Ultrasonic cleaners, steam, heat and chemicals are not safe for every gemstone. When in doubt, use gentle cleaning and seek professional advice for the specific stone and setting.
