What Is Silver?
Silver is a naturally white precious metal with high reflectivity. Pure silver is soft, so jewellery is commonly made from a silver alloy that improves strength while retaining the metal’s appearance.
Sterling Silver and 925
Sterling silver is commonly marked 925, meaning at least 925 parts silver per thousand in the alloy. Other recognised silver fineness standards also exist.
In the UK, silver articles described as silver generally require a recognised hallmark when the precious-metal weight is 7.78 grams or more, subject to statutory exemptions.
Why Silver Tarnishes
Silver can react with sulphur-containing compounds in the environment and form a dark surface layer commonly called tarnish. Tarnish is not the same thing as the metal “going bad”; it can usually be cleaned or polished appropriately.
Perfume, cosmetics, humidity, storage materials and air quality can all affect how quickly an item changes appearance.
