Simple ways to manage tarnish, scratching and everyday residue on silver jewellery.
Why Silver Changes Colour
Sterling silver can tarnish as it reacts with substances in the air and environment. Tarnish is a surface reaction and does not automatically mean the jewellery is defective.
Reduce Tarnish and Surface Damage
- Store clean, dry silver separately in a closed pouch, box or suitable anti-tarnish storage product.
- Avoid chlorine, bleach, household chemicals, perfume and prolonged contact with cosmetics.
- Remove silver jewellery before swimming, showering and strenuous activity.
- Wipe the jewellery with a soft cloth after wear to remove oils and moisture.
Cleaning Silver
A specialist silver polishing cloth can remove light tarnish from suitable plain silver. For robust items, mild washing-up liquid and lukewarm water may be suitable. Dry thoroughly after cleaning.
Be careful with intentional finishes Do not aggressively polish oxidised, antiqued, plated or deliberately darkened silver because polishing can remove or change the intended finish. |
Silver with Stones
The cleaning method must be suitable for the stones as well as the silver. Pearls, opals, turquoise and many other delicate materials require more cautious treatment than plain sterling silver.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is blackening on silver permanent?
Ordinary tarnish can often be reduced by careful cleaning or professional polishing. Deliberate oxidised or antique finishes are different and should not be removed unless that is what you want.
Can I use silver dip?
Only if the product instructions confirm it is suitable for the complete item. Dips can be unsuitable for certain stones, finishes, plating and intentionally oxidised areas.
How should I store sterling silver?
Keep it clean, dry and separated from other jewellery, ideally in a closed pouch or suitable anti-tarnish storage material.
